A printed paper stencil is good for one project, maybe two. Which is fine — until you are halfway through a repeating pattern on a hallway wall and the stencil has gone soft, furry at the edges, and started printing smudges instead of shapes.
Making a stencil that survives fifty uses is not difficult and costs very little. It is mostly about choosing the right material for how many times you will actually use it, and then a few habits that add years rather than uses.
Match the material to the job
The commonest mistake is over-engineering a one-off, or under-engineering a repeat. Be honest about which you are doing.

The laminating route: best value by a distance
A cheap home laminator costs about twenty pounds and turns a ten-pence sheet of card into a stencil that will do a whole hallway. It is the upgrade that makes the biggest practical difference to anyone stencilling more than occasionally.
The critical detail: laminate first, then cut. Print your design on card, run the whole uncut sheet through the laminator, and cut afterwards. Do it the other way round and the pouch seals into every opening, gluing your stencil shut.
Cutting laminated card needs a fresh blade and a little more pressure than plain card — two passes rather than one forced one. The plastic edge that results is what makes it wipeable, so it is worth the extra minute.
No laminator? Wide packing tape does a decent imitation. Cover both sides of the printed card with overlapping strips, press out the bubbles, then cut. Not as durable, but it will take a stencil from five uses to perhaps twenty for the price of nothing.
Mylar: the one that lasts for years
Mylar is what commercial stencils are made from — a flexible polyester sheet, usually 125 to 190 micron, that is effectively permanent. It wipes clean, does not soften when wet, and survives being rolled, stored badly and used hundreds of times.
Most home printers will not print on it, so there are two approaches. Either tape your printed design underneath the sheet and cut through the mylar following the lines beneath, or trace the design onto the mylar with a fine permanent marker first and cut to that.
It cuts with more resistance than card. Take two lighter passes rather than forcing the blade, keep the blade fresh, and work slowly on curves. A cutting machine handles mylar well if you have one — set to a slower speed and a deeper blade setting than you would use for card.
Cutting habits that prevent tearing
Most stencils die at the point of cutting rather than in use, and nearly always in the same places.
- Fresh blade for every detailed stencil. Blades cost pennies. A blade that cut three stencils yesterday will drag today, and drag turns into a tear at the thinnest point of the design.
- Cut the smallest interior shapes first. While the sheet is whole it is rigid, and rigidity is what lets you steer accurately. Save the outline for last.
- Rotate the sheet, not your wrist. Pull every cut toward yourself at a comfortable angle, turning the work between cuts. Curves cut this way come out smooth; curves cut by contorting your hand come out faceted.
- Never force the blade. Two light passes through card or mylar, always. Forcing is how cuts wander into the piece you wanted to keep.
Reinforcing the parts that always fail
Every design has a weak point, and it is predictable: long thin bridges, the counters of letters, whiskers, antlers, branch tips. Two ways to strengthen them before they break rather than after.
Tape from underneath. A short piece of clear tape on the back, spanning a fragile bridge, doubles its strength and does not affect the painted result at all — the tape sits against the surface, outside the opening.
Widen the bridge at the design stage. If you are making your own artwork, anything under 2mm will fail. Three to four millimetres is the sweet spot: strong enough to survive, thin enough to read as a deliberate stencil gap. Our stencil-making guide covers bridge design properly.
Cleaning without destroying
This is where most reusable stencils actually die — not from use, but from being cleaned badly or not at all.
Wipe while wet. Acrylic and emulsion come off a laminated or mylar stencil with a damp cloth in seconds while the paint is still soft. Once dry it bonds, and picking at dried paint is what tears bridges.
Do not soak card, even laminated. Water gets into the cut edges and delaminates it from the inside. A damp cloth, not a sink.
Mylar can be washed properly. Warm soapy water, a soft brush, lay flat to dry. This is the material's real advantage.
Dried paint on mylar: a little rubbing alcohol on a cloth lifts acrylic without harming the sheet. Do not use acetone or nail varnish remover — it will fog and weaken it.
Never store a stencil rolled up. It keeps the curl permanently and will not lie flat again, which means it will never give a clean edge afterwards. Flat storage is not optional for anything you want to keep.
Storing them so they are usable next year
Flat, always. A box file, an art folder, a large envelope, or clipped to a trouser hanger in a wardrobe — all fine. Interleave with paper if you are stacking several, so any residual paint cannot transfer between them.
Label them. A permanent marker on a corner with the design name saves genuinely irritating amounts of time when you have thirty stencils in a folder and want the one specific leaf.
And keep the digital file. Everything on this site can be re-downloaded and reprinted for free at any point, so a card stencil that finally gives out after fifty uses is a five-minute problem rather than a lost design.
