Bold Snowflake Stencil — The Chunky One That Anyone Can Cut

Six thick arms, one short pair of branches each, and a solid central disc. The bold snowflake is deliberately the simplest in our Christmas set, and that is exactly why it gets used the most once December arrives.

About this stencil

Every other snowflake on this site rewards patience with a craft knife. This one does not need any. The main arms are 13mm wide at A4, the branches are over 9mm, and the hub in the middle is a 40mm disc. There is nothing here that a pair of kitchen scissors cannot manage, which makes it the snowflake we point people towards for classroom use, for stencilling with children, or for anyone who simply wants a result in ten minutes rather than an afternoon.

Thick elements also change how the design behaves under paint. Fine snowflakes need a nearly dry sponge and a light touch, otherwise paint creeps under the narrow bridges. The bold snowflake forgives a heavier hand. You can use a small foam roller on it, you can spray through it, and you can even press it into wet icing on a cake without the arms tearing. The bridges between the white gaps are all generous, so the stencil holds its shape through dozens of uses.

The trade-off is subtlety. From a distance this reads as a graphic, almost logo-like snowflake rather than a delicate ice crystal. That is a strength on a dark feature wall or a shop window, and it is the right choice whenever the finished snowflake will be seen from more than a couple of metres away. For close-up work on cards or linen, the lace snowflake or fern snowflake will look more refined.

Best surfaces & materials

Because the arms are so wide, this design copes with paints and tools that would ruin a finer stencil. These are the surfaces it is most often used on.

How to use this stencil — step by step

The bold snowflake has fewer fiddly parts than any other design in the set, so the process is short. Most of the time goes into choosing the scale.

  1. Decide how far away the snowflake will be seen. Up close, print at 50 to 70% of A4. For walls and windows, print at 100% or scale up to A3 at a print shop.
  2. Cut the six arms out with scissors or a craft knife. There are no internal islands in this design, so you can cut it in one continuous pass and nothing falls out.
  3. For walls, mist the back with repositionable spray adhesive. For glass, low-tack masking tape at the four corners is enough because the cut-outs are large and will not lift.
  4. Load a foam roller or wide sponge and take most of the paint off on scrap paper first. The wide openings tempt you to use too much.
  5. Roll or dab from the centre outwards, following the arms, so paint pushes against the cut edge rather than under it.
  6. Peel while the paint is still slightly damp. On windows, wait until the spray is touch-dry or the edge will smear.

Make it look like it is snowing: print three copies at 100%, 70% and 45%, then apply the largest low on the wall or window and the smaller ones higher up and further apart. Overlapping two of the big ones by a few millimetres in one spot sells the effect. Resist the urge to space them evenly, because real snow never lands on a grid.

Project ideas for this design

This is the workhorse snowflake, and most of these projects can be finished in a single evening.

Dark feature wall

Matt white or pale blue chalk paint on a navy or forest-green wall. Three sizes, loosely scattered. It comes off with a damp cloth after the season if you use chalk paint.

Shop window display

Snow spray through the stencil in a loose band across the lower third of the glass. The thick arms read clearly from across the street.

Christmas cake topper

Cocoa dusted over white icing or icing sugar over chocolate. One large snowflake dead centre, nothing else. Looks professional for the cost of a sieve.

Classroom window

Children paint through the card stencil onto tissue paper, then you tape the sheets to the window as a group display.

Doormat and sacks

Exterior acrylic on a plain coir mat or hessian sack. The bold design is the only snowflake coarse enough to show on rough fibre.

Frequently asked questions

Is the bold snowflake suitable for young children?

Yes, and it is the one we would choose. The arms are wide enough that a child can cut the stencil with safety scissors, and the openings are large enough that poster paint and a sponge give a clear result without any technique.

Will snow spray work through this stencil?

It works better than through any other snowflake we offer. Hold the can about 25cm from the glass, spray in short bursts rather than one long pass, and let it become touch-dry before peeling. The wide bridges stop the spray from lifting the stencil.

Can I put a cake stencil in contact with food?

Cut this one from a fresh sheet of plain white card or a clean acetate sheet, never from a printed page, and dust through it rather than pressing it down. Wash acetate between uses. The design has no fine parts to trap sugar.

How does this compare with the original snowflake stencil?

The original snowflake has finer arms with two tiers of branches and suits cards and close-up work. The bold version has roughly twice the arm width and is built for distance, speed and rough surfaces.
