Best designs for wood burning
How to transfer a stencil design to wood
Method 1 — Graphite paper transfer: Print the stencil at your desired size. Place graphite paper (carbon paper) graphite-side down on the wood, lay the printed stencil on top, and trace firmly over every line with a ballpoint pen. Lift both sheets to reveal the transferred design on the wood, ready to burn.
Method 2 — Pencil back transfer: Print the stencil, then scribble densely over the back of the printed lines with a soft pencil (4B or 6B). Place pencil-side down on the wood and trace the design from the front. The pencil graphite transfers to the wood.
Method 3 — Projector: For very large pieces, project the SVG file directly onto the wood surface and trace the outline with a pencil before burning.
Which tip to use
For outlines and bold shapes like the wolf, eagle and mountain scene: use a medium ballpoint tip at medium temperature for clean, consistent lines. For fine detail like the Celtic knot or mandala: switch to a fine writing tip and reduce temperature. For shading: use a shading tip in circular motions to build up tone.
Best wood surfaces
Basswood is the most popular for beginners — light colour, fine grain, burns evenly and cleanly. Birch plywood gives a beautiful result on larger pieces. Pine can be used but has variable grain that can cause uneven burning. Wooden plaques and rounds from craft shops are perfect for wall art and gifts.
Wood burning tips
🌡️ Temperature control
Start lower than you think you need. You can always go darker by burning a second pass, but you can't lighten a burn that's too dark.
🧹 Clean your tip
Wipe the tip on a leather strop or fine sandpaper every few minutes to remove carbon buildup. A clean tip burns more precisely and evenly.
📐 Grain direction
Burning with the grain gives a smoother result. Burning across the grain can cause slight texture. For very fine detail, sand the wood to 320 grit before burning.
🛡️ Sealing finished work
Seal completed wood burning with clear matt varnish, Danish oil or beeswax. This protects the wood, deepens the burned tones and prevents dirty fingermarks.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best stencil design for wood burning beginners?
The wolf, compass rose and mountain scene are ideal for beginners — bold clean lines with minimal fine detail. Avoid the Celtic knot or mandala until you're comfortable with your burning tool.
How do I transfer a stencil to wood?
Print the stencil, place graphite paper (carbon paper) graphite-side down on the wood, lay the printed stencil on top, and trace firmly over every line with a ballpoint pen. The graphite transfers the design to the wood.
What wood is best for pyrography beginners?
Basswood is the best choice for beginners — it is pale, has a fine even grain and burns predictably and cleanly. Available from craft shops and online.
Do I need to seal wood burning after I finish?
Yes — seal with clear matt varnish, Danish oil or beeswax. This protects the surface from moisture and dirty marks, and the sealer slightly deepens and enriches the burned tones.
Can I use these SVG files directly without printing?
Yes — open the SVG on a laptop or tablet, place next to your wood, and use it as a visual reference while burning freehand. Or project it onto the wood using a portable projector.
