Carve the body first and the wings outward from it, so the strongest part of the design is cut while the pumpkin wall is intact. The wing tips are the thinnest points — ease off the pressure as you reach them. If a tip does break, a cocktail stick pushed through from behind will hold it while the pumpkin is on display.

How big should the pumpkin be?
Medium or larger. The wings need width, so a tall narrow pumpkin will crowd the design.
