The whiskers are the fine work — cut them last, after every larger shape is done, and use the sharpest blade you have. On a real pumpkin, consider scraping the whisker lines rather than cutting all the way through: the skin glows amber where it is thinned, which looks better than a hole. Ears want a clean point, so cut into the corner from both directions.

Is this harder to carve than a plain face?
Moderately. The whiskers and ear points need care, but nothing here is genuinely fiddly. Do it second, not first.
What is scraping rather than cutting?
Removing only the orange skin so light glows through without a hole. It gives you two tones on one pumpkin and suits the whiskers perfectly.
Will it work at small sizes?
Down to about 40% of A4. Below that the whiskers disappear — at which point our black cat design is a better choice.
Can I paint it instead?
Yes, and it is easier that way. White paint on a real pumpkin or black on a white artificial one both look excellent.
